As a young child learning cello, piano and later singing, StanLei (stan-lay) loved listening to her dad’s cassettes of Billie Holliday, the Beach Boys, Queen and the Eagles – and she still loves sad songs and angelic harmonies. Drawing on the folky lyricism of classic rock and vocal yearnings of jazz and blues for her first musical offering, StanLei is a folk-pop-punk singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based in Toulouse (France).
She began singing and songwriting at 14, and at 16 was making vocal choruses for friends making underground UK hip hop and early grime. At 18 she started teaching herself the guitar and moved to her adopted hometown of Bristol, where she sang with various local bands. In 2015 she began travelling extensively as a nomadic seasonal worker, developing her songwriting and connecting with people from around the world through music.
Her debut EP BASSLESS was recorded with producer and drummer Sam Bradley (Sonic Sculpture Recording, Hawaii). A stripped-down, siren-voiced acoustic offering, delivered raw with flavours of blues, folk, soul and surf rock and featuring acclaimed NYC guitarist Rotem Sivan, BASSLESS was released independently on all major music platforms in April 2019. The 4 tracks take the listener on the journey of a soul searching for home outside itself, with different threads exploring the joy of honeymoon love (Dr Sunshine), the urge to get away from yourself (Run) and self-belief (Oh Sea [Mama Mar]).
StanLei has just moved to the south of France after finishing her first European acoustic tour in September 2019. She is currently working on her debut album, delving more into beats, bars, bass and the edge of jazz.
